Making The Nine

The nine began as flat cymbals.

My trip to the newsprint processing factory of the Youssef Allam Group. The company gave me one hundred kilograms of paper.

The day the paper arrived.

My studio at Fayoum Art Center in Tunis Village. I reflected on my time there in a series of letters I wrote to Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre in England. They are available online as part of PSC’s Industry of Sculpture interview series.

The Nine emerged over a period of years. The process involved an unpredictable sequence of delays, additions and subtractions. I took this photograph shortly before leaving Fayoum in the winter of 2019.

July 2021, Faggala.

By October I had begun to look and listen. I returned to first principles.
